Anti-Generative AI Policy
Opinions around the use of generative AI cover a wide spectrum, and this policy reflects the beliefs and convictions of PAPER SCISSORS WOOL. As analogue-lovers, we believe in facilitating creativity through handmaking and handwriting. While we don’t pretend to understand the many ways in which artificial intelligence has been harnessed for good, we are broadly concerned about the environmental impacts and ethical issues around the use of generative AI for non-essential purposes or to replace human creativity.

At PAPER SCISSORS WOOL, we do not knowingly use or endorse the use of AI-generated images or text on our website, social media platforms, or anywhere else. While the technological platforms that we use have shoe-horned AI into every function, we avoid using these wherever possible. Our text is written and proofread entirely by a human being. The photos on our website or social media accounts are minimally edited to enhance colour, sharpness, or brightness and we occasionally employ AI background removal.
While we can’t guarantee that generative AI hasn’t been used during product development by the brands that we stock, we endeavour to stock products designed by real artists and manufacturers.
Our logo and wordmark were developed by our friend, Arum Kim (Pick Your Mix), who was fairly compensated for her work. Many of the event photos on our Instagram were also taken by Arum or her partner, Kai.

Furthermore, we do not employ AI chatbots for any purpose. This is because customer service and connection are some of our core values, and we don’t believe that a chatbot could sufficiently provide high quality service or connection. When you receive communications from us, whether by email or within social media platforms, they will have been written by a human being (most likely Karen).
